Details
WordCraft is an open-source word processor written from scratch in pure Rust (dual-licensed MIT / Apache-2.0, about 17k GitHub stars when we checked on 2026-11-03), aiming to be a free, offline Word alternative that belongs to its users: the familiar ribbon interface, styles, tables, track changes and comments, tables of contents and footnotes, citations and bibliographies, and mail merge are all there. It reads and writes docx natively, imports legacy doc, odt, rtf, html, md and txt, and exports PDFs with selectable text. Spelling and grammar checks run entirely offline, and the interface ships in 20+ languages including Simplified Chinese. Native apps cover macOS, Windows, Linux and BSD, and the official site offers a web version too. One honest caveat: the official page marks it as still in development, with features and stability changing fast — back up important documents before trying it, and do not gamble your only copy.
Who it's for
Word users who do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription but still need docx compatibility, and open-source enthusiasts happy to try software that is still in development.
18btc Crypto Tools Navigator · Our Take
“Native docx support plus fully offline operation already earn it a bookmark. Just take the “in development” label seriously — back up important documents and confirm it handles them before it replaces your main word processor.”
