Details
PhotoCraft is an open-source image editor written from scratch in pure Rust (dual-licensed MIT / Apache-2.0, about 76k GitHub stars, still updated on the day we checked, 2026-11-03), aiming to be a free, offline Photoshop alternative that belongs to its users: layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, type, vectors and brushes — and it opens and saves real PSD files, so you can exchange project files with Photoshop users. The native app runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and the official site also offers a web version. One honest caveat, in the project's own words: it is still early alpha, with features and stability changing fast — great for trying out and for light editing today, not yet a drop-in replacement for the main tool in a production workflow.
Who it's for
Image editors who do not want an Adobe subscription but still need layers and PSD compatibility, and open-source enthusiasts happy to try early software.
18btc Crypto Tools Navigator · Our Take
“The interface is far more finished than you would expect, and real PSD support alone earns it a bookmark. Just take the alpha label seriously — rehearse on small files, never on a client's deliverable.”
